What can push the total up
- The train. This is the biggest cost. Fares vary widely by day and time, and panoramic classes start at about US$ 100 each way.
- The transfer from Cusco. Most trains leave from Ollantaytambo, so add that trip or choose a combined bus and train ticket.
- The mountain hikes. Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain cost more than a standard circuit. Check the fare on the official site.
- A night in Aguas Calientes. It lets you go up early, and hotels usually cost more than in Cusco.
- A guide. It's optional, and the price depends on whether it's a group or private tour.
How to spend less
- Compare departure times: another train can cost a lot less.
- Walk up or down: you save up to US$ 22 per adult if you're fit enough.
- Peruvians, residents and citizens of Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador get a reduced entrance fare.
- Buy the bus and entrance ticket through official channels. Some resellers charge more.
If you're Peruvian
With the national fare, the reference drops to about US$ 153 per adult: train from US$ 120, bus US$ 13 and entrance S/ 69.
The Hidroeléctrica route is cheaper, but it takes longer and depends on the weather.
