What to Book First for Machu Picchu: The Right Order
Book your entrance ticket first. It has limited spots by day and time, and the rest of your trip depends on it.
The order, step by step
- Entrance ticket. Pick your day, time and circuit at tuboleto.cultura.pe, the Ministry of Culture site. It sells out first, especially in high season.
- Train. Pick one that reaches Aguas Calientes well before your entrance time.
- Hotel. If you're staying in Aguas Calientes, book it once you have your ticket and train.
- Bus. It's sold separately from the entrance ticket, at torontoy.com or the ticket office in Aguas Calientes. Online sales open about 30 days ahead. Buy at least 4 days before your visit.
- Guide. It's optional, and it's the last thing you need to decide.
Common mistakes
- Buying the train before the ticket. If that day is sold out, you'll have to change your trip.
- Leaving too little time. In high season, the bus line can take a while.
- Buying the bus from resellers. Some charge more than the reference fare. Avoid street sellers.
- Bringing large suitcases. The train allows little luggage, and the citadel limits bag size.
About the bus
In 2026, Consettur and San Antonio de Torontoy are running the route temporarily while a new concession is defined. Confirm the company and fare close to your trip. Under Torontoy's terms, you should board 1 hour before your entrance time, and you can request one date change, up to 24 hours ahead.
